WATERFALLS OF MARMORE

#WATERFALLS

The Marmore Waterfalls is one of the most famous waterfalls in Italy. It is located 13 KM away from the course in the wonderful Natural Park of the Marmore Falls.

The Marmore Falls is considered one of the highest in Europe: the overall difference in height between the top and the base is 165 meters, divided into three jumps that give it its spectacular current appearance. The waterfall is formed by the Velino river, which flows into the Nera river flowing from the nearby Piediluco lake. The name Marmore derives from the peculiar calcium carbonate salts that settle on the rocks of the mountain, whose reflection of the sunlight makes them resemble crystals of white marble. Marmore is also the name of the nearby medieval town, one of the most beautiful villages in the Valnerina together with Piediluco and Arrone.

Marmore Waterfalls: routes

It is good to pay attention to the visiting hours of the waterfall, in fact it is not always possible to see it in its full form.

The Parco della Cascata is the tourist-excursion complex that is located all around the waterfall. The park is full of paths and paths that wind through the natural environment, characterized by the luxuriant vegetation of holm oaks, black hornbeams and ash trees, while ferns and mosses prefer travertine rocks near the river. The park also houses numerous historical testimonies, remains of industrial archeology and hydraulic works.

#RAFTING

Sports enthusiasts can practice or approach numerous aquatic disciplines inside the waterfalls such as:

  • Rafting
  • Hydrospeed
  • Day and night river walking
  • Soft Rafting and Tubing

# PIEDILUCO LAKE

Located at the southern tip of Umbria, on the border with Lazio, squeezed between the Luco and Caperno mountains, it is the largest in the region after Trasimeno. The basin has an irregular shape and precisely from this derives a considerable development of the bank of about 13 km, compared to the surface which is only 1.52 sq km.

CITY OF TERNI

#CITY

Located in the south-eastern part of Umbria, surrounded by an amphitheater of hills, Terni extends over a vast plain at the confluence of the Serra river with the Nera river. Starting from the second half of the 19th century, the city was one of the first in Italy to participate in that industrial revolution which earned it the nickname of “Italian Manchester”, thanks to the enormous energy source of the Marmore Falls.

In Terni, the Basilica of San Valentino is definitely worth a visit, which houses the body of the saint, patron saint of lovers

CITY OF NARNI

#CITY

The city preserves a very rich heritage accumulated in three thousand years of history: the grandiose bridge of Augustus, the Cardona bridge and the aqueduct of Formina remain from the Roman era.

Narni also boasts notable monuments of the medieval period, such as the cathedral of San Giovenale, with a Romanesque portal, wooden choir and mosaics, the churches of San Domenico, a former city cathedral dedicated to Santa Maria Maggiore, and of Santa Maria Inpensole (1175), jewels of Narnese Romanesque architecture. Also interesting are the church of Sant’Agostino (15th century) and the church of San Francesco (14th century). Next to it, in the Fraporta district, the Eroli palace, seat of the Museum of the city and of the territory, with the local annexes of the civic library.

#NARNI UNDERGROUND

#MUSEUM OF THE CITY AND THE TERRITORY

The museum itinerary is divided into two sections. The first contains finds and fossil remains ranging from prehistoric times to medieval times and contains references related to the life of the famous captain of fortune Gattamelata, aka Erasmo da Narni. The second houses the Pinacoteca, in which works by local artists ranging from the fourteenth to the eighteenth century are exhibited, among which you can admire the Annunciation by Benozzo Gozzoli and the Coronation of the Virgin by Domenico Ghirlandaio, both commissioned by Cardinal Berardo Eroli , and the bronze bowl of the Fountain in Piazza dei Priori from 1303. This wide path is accompanied by maxi luminous screens and evocative music that deepen what is on display.

#ROCCA ALBORNOZIANA

The Rocca albornoziana rises imposingly over Narni and the Gorges of the Nera, surrounded by luxuriant vegetation.

The imposing building is part of that system of fortresses that the Papacy, after Avignon, placed as a garrison of the newly reconquered State of the Church. Its position and constructive characteristics show the desire for control over the territory, crossed by the communication routes with Perugia, Terni and Amelia.
